Diary reports of being in India, october 15th

Day 5, Tuesday october 15th, Dörthe
After having spent the night at Lovely Professional University, short LPU, we started the day with breakfast in the University's dining hall. They had this indian bread (ciabbatti), sandwiches, vegetarian balls and some other indian sauce. For drinking they offered water and coffee. We left the university later than it has been planed because our students were so exhausted from the long day before with lot of activities. So everybody was thankful that we were allowed to sleep longer. Leaving at ten it took another three hours to reach Amritsar, the home town of the golden Temple. Because we couldn't get straight to the temple with our bus, we had to take the Tangas (dongas) to get there. That was a really funny experience, although we all felt sorry for the horses which had to pull us. At the entrance of the temple we had to take off our shoes and socks and collected them in a bag. We also had to cover our hair, even the boys. Astonishment spread when our group first spotted the golden temple. It is a big building completely covered in gold. Around the temple is a lake containing holy water. We didn't walk into the temple because there was a queue of a few hundred people in front of it and it would have taken too long to get in there. But the building around it was already stunning enough. It consisted mostly of white marble and was really clean, considering how many thousand people had walked over it barefoot during the day. After some time wandering around, looking at the different facilities of the building and taking pictures we met to have lunch in the holy dining place. Its full of people and serves traditional Indian food for free to everyone who entered the golden temple. We rode back to the bus with the Tangas again, after having had a short Break at Domino's Pizza for those who didn't eat at the temple. The bus drive back took another few hours, only interrupted for a Little break at Haveli's. Dinner was served in a local Club House in Sangrur and afterwards we went back to hour host families, where we fell into our beds, being really tired.

Day 5, Tuesday October 15, Jari
After having arrived at the "Lovely Professional University" late in the night the day before, we spent our night sleeping in the student residence on the campus.
The rooms were quite good and we even learned to know some of the students in our house who gave us some information about India and the university. And because they were studying engineering, they wanted to know about the "Country of Cars", Germany, because they wanted to go there for work after studying.
We got up at 7:30 to leave at 8:15 but when we were ready the Indian teacher told us that we would leave later because most people were still tired. With regards to the quite long bus trip to the "Golden Temple" of Amritsar that was planned for today, we first took breakfast at the canteen, which contained Indian bread, spicy sandwiches, vegetarian fried, vegetable balls and a sauce including beans. After that we started our journey to the temple. When we arrived we had to take vehicles pulled by horses to get there. Even though it was a new experience and quite fun, we felt sorry for the animals because they were really thin and had to work very hard when carrying about 6 people. After having arrived at the temple we had to put off our shoes and to take a towel on our heads to cover the hair, both, boys and girls.
Some of us looked like pirates or tried to wrap it as a turban around their heads, it was a new experience and everybody felt comfortable with it. When we passed the gates of the temple, we had to walk through a basin of water to wash our feet. We walked down a stairway and in the middle of a lake of holy water stood the temple made of pure gold. There were so many people that we only took pictures and did not walk into the temple because we would have had to wait for hours. But the area around it was interesting as well and we were walking around for some time to get a good impression of the place. After that some of the students were going to a giant dining room where everyone could eat for free. Some others went to the shops around to buy souvenirs or Coke, which was really cheap, two bottles for around 12 cents. When we finally left the temple, we walked down the road to "Dominos", a Restaurant where everyone who has not been eating at the temple got food there. We talked with Mr. Rettberg about our Journey so far and planned to ask the teachers of Vasant Valley for a Visit of the Slum School.
Finally we got back to the bus and went on our trip back to Sangrur where we ate in a Restaurant near the city.
With regards to the last two days one could say that it was a successful trip with many new experiences and loads of fun. Especially the second day at the temple was an intense impression of the Indian lifestyle, which is most easy to get by having a walk ok the streets, we hope to be able to this again because those experiences will be the most memorable of our journey.
